The Government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy recently announced its revised plans to incentivise homeowners to install low-carbon heating systems.

The new £7.5K grant is part of a £450 million 3-year Boiler Upgrade Scheme which commenced in April 2022. Customers who install a low-carbon heating system (air source heat pump) will receive an up front grant to help with the cost of installation.

The new Boiler Upgrade Scheme replaced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Many will view the up front payment as a welcome change, compared to the quarterly RHI trickle spread over a seven year period. However, it will largely depend upon your personal circumstances and the size of your property, if the new scheme outweighs the old in terms of  financial remuneration.

Some property owners will find the newer criteria provides less choice, meaning they will not be able to utilise their existing central heating infrastructure, but for those looking to replace the entire system, the upfront financial support will make a sizeable contribution towards the overall cost.
