Are Air Source Heat Pump Efficiency Rates Affected By the Weather?

More and more people are turning to green energy. Air source heat pump efficiency rates are four times better than traditional gas boilers.

A heat hump can reduce your carbon footprint by about 44%, so it’s a great way to improve the environmental impact of your home.

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

Put simply, they transfer warm air from outside the home to inside it. The air has to blow through a compressor and heat exchange and is then turned into hot water.

The unit looks like a box with a fan inside. It’ll be fit to the exterior of your home and works very quietly. The noise that they make is compared to the hum of a refrigerator.

They last for about 20 years, which is twice the life expectancy of a boiler.

Why Choose a Heat Pump Over a Gas Boiler?

For starters, they are significantly more efficient. They’re also a clean, renewable source of energy. For these reasons, gas boilers will be banned in new builds from 2025.

Air source heat pumps are cheaper to install than ground source, and the government has various schemes in place to subsidise their initial costs. Carbon Saving Group are an MCS certified installer, so we can apply for a grant on your behalf to save £5,000.

Air Source Heat Pump Efficiency in Winter

As you might expect, the weather conditions do effect air source heat pump efficiency. In winter, they’re expected to be about 20% less efficient because more electricity will be used to draw out heat. This doesn’t mean that they are any less efficient than a gas boiler in winter. In fact, even with these reduced efficiency rates, they’re still about 2.5x more efficient!

Heat pumps can work in weather as cold as -10 degrees, and some models are even capable of working at a very chilly -25°C.

You might wonder how this is possible. Although the air temperature feels cold to you, the air would actually need to be -273°C for there to be no heat at all.

What About Electricity Costs?

Everyone has felt the crunch from the recent rise in electricity prices. Air source heat pumps do require electricity to work, but it will use less energy than the heat it produces. This means that it’s still an energy-efficient solution that will warm your home for less.
